GPS trackers for dementia wandering: finding someone who has already gone out

A watch, tag, pendant or insole that reports where it is. It helps you find someone who has already left the house — if it is charged, if it is being worn, and if they are outdoors.

The fear is specific, and it starts at the front door. The coat is gone, the keys are gone, and nobody knows which way. Every minute after that is spent guessing.

A locator is meant to shorten that hour. It reports its own position to a phone app, so a search can begin with a point on a map instead of a street name. It does not stop anyone leaving, and it only helps if it is on the person when they go.

Four different things sold under one word

Four technologies are sold under the same heading, and they behave very differently.

GPS models mostly add geofencing: an alert when the wearer leaves a set area. Some add a call button, and some add listen-in audio.

Bluetooth tags are cheap and battery-light, but they only report where another phone in the manufacturer's network last passed them. In a rural area, that may be nowhere.

Radio-frequency systems such as Project Lifesaver pair a wrist transmitter with receivers held by a search partner. The program claims "4,653 RESCUED" (Project Lifesaver, accessed September 2026); Canadian availability is not stated on its own site, and the Waterloo list prices its PLI-10KSYS Personal Locator System at $872.00 CAD (2024).

Registries are not devices at all. MedicAlert Connect Protect and Ontario's Finding Your Way identification kit (Finding Your Way, accessed September 2026) speed up the search once police are involved.

When a locator is the right tool

A locator fits a person who still walks outdoors alone and has become disoriented at least once, and who will accept something on their wrist or in their shoe. It pairs badly with an indoor problem: if the concern is getting up and moving around the house at 3 a.m., a door contact and a room presence sensor answer that far better, and neither has to be worn or charged. Nor does a locator replace a deliberate call for help — that is a pendant or watch. The Alzheimer Society frames the choice around the person: some see a tracking device as enhancing "personal freedom, security and safety", while "[o]thers may feel it is an invasion of privacy", and it asks families to weigh "the person's lifelong values and wishes about personal freedom, privacy, independence and safety" (Alzheimer Society of Canada, 2024).

What to ask before buying

  1. Will the person actually wear it, all day, including outdoors? What happens if they take it off?
  2. How long does the battery last, who charges it, and does a low battery alert anyone?
  3. Is it GPS, Bluetooth or radio-frequency, and does it need a search partner such as a police service?
  4. Does it work across Canada, on which cellular network, and what is the monthly fee?
  5. Where is the location history stored, in which country, and for how long? Who can see it?
  6. Does it include listen-in audio? That is recording, and consent applies.
  7. Has the person consented, and if they cannot, who is deciding on their behalf and on what authority?
  8. Is the household registered with MedicAlert Connect Protect or a local equivalent, and does the family have a current photo and a written plan for the first hour?

What it cannot do

A locator does not prevent anyone from leaving, and it does nothing at all if the device is on the charger, in a coat pocket or removed. Indoors, in a mall, a parking garage or a large building, satellite accuracy degrades badly. Cellular models need coverage and a subscription. Battery life is measured in a day or two for most wearables, which makes a nightly charging routine part of the care plan — and a routine is exactly what dementia erodes.

None of these devices detects a fall, and none replaces a phone call to 911 when someone is missing.

Frequently asked questions

Does a GPS tracker work inside the house?

Poorly. The Alzheimer Society of Canada describes GPS as "[m]ost effective outdoors" (Tracking devices, updated December 2024). For indoor questions, a door contact or a room presence sensor is the better tool.

Can I track a parent without telling them?

This is an ethical and legal question, not a technical one. The Alzheimer Society asks families to weigh the person's own lifelong values about privacy and independence. Consent, capacity and substitute decision-making rules differ by province; ask the care team, and if necessary a lawyer.

Is a Bluetooth tag good enough?

Only if the person goes missing somewhere busy. A tag reports where a stranger's phone last passed it, so quiet streets and rural areas leave gaps.

Where WalledCare fits

That is the one respect in which it beats a locator on its own terms: the failure mode the Alzheimer Society flags, a device that "[n]eeds to be charged frequently" (Tracking devices, updated December 2024), does not exist for a unit that is plugged into the wall.

Everything else is against it here. It cannot locate anyone who has left the house, has no map, no geofence and no outdoor coverage of any kind, does not detect falls, does not measure breathing, and is not a medical device. For wandering outdoors, a locator, a door contact and a registry are the right tools, and this page is about them.
