Radar fall detection: what these sensors catch, and what they miss

Wall and ceiling sensors that claim to recognise a fall with nothing worn. Plausible physics, thin independent evidence — so read the vendor's own wording.

The pendant is in a drawer and a camera is out of the question in a bathroom, so the question becomes whether something on the wall or the ceiling can notice a fall by itself. Several companies say theirs can. Nothing is worn, nothing is charged, and no picture is taken. What is thin is the evidence that it works in a real home rather than a laboratory, which is why the vendor's exact wording matters more in this category than in any other.

  • A 2025 systematic review of 80 fall-detection studies found mean accuracies of 91.1% for wearable sensors, 92.6% for non-wearable ones and 94.6% for hybrids — but the authors note the datasets "still offer only stereotypical solutions to falls, often simulated, without considering the health profile of participants or changing environments", and that detection time "is rarely tested in real-life situations" (Gorce & Jacquier-Bret, Sensors, 2025).
  • Vendors' own accuracy headlines carry the same caveat, sometimes on the same page. Milesight advertises "High Fall Detection Accuracy of Up to 99%" for its ceiling-mounted VS373 and states in the specifications that "The part of the data are all derived from laboratory conditions, and there may be deviations in actual use due to changes in the objective environment" (Milesight VS373 product page, checked 2026-09-07). No test method, sample size or false-alarm rate is published alongside the 99%.
  • The gentlest falls are the hardest to detect, whatever the sensor. Lifeline Canada says of its worn AutoAlert pendant: "Fall Detection does not detect 100% of falls. If able, you should always press the button that you wear", and that "Undetectable falls can include a gradual slide from a seated position, such as from a wheelchair, which may not register as a fall" (Lifeline Canada, checked 2026-09-07). The same physics limits a room sensor.
  • We have found no independent real-world validation of a consumer radar fall detector in Canada.

How a sensor on the wall is meant to know

A radar sensor tracks how a body moves through a room. Software watches for the shape of a fall: a rapid drop toward floor level, followed by staying there. When that pattern matches, the device raises an alert to an app, a pager or a monitoring centre.

This is a different category from radar presence and activity sensors, which report presence, movement and prolonged stillness and make no fall claim at all. The hardware overlaps; the claim does not.

The falls it is least likely to catch

The falls that matter most are often the least dramatic. A slow slide from a chair or a slump against a wall does not produce the sharp drop the software is looking for, and responsible vendors say so in their own product pages.

Ask what a claim was tested on. The published accuracy figures are overwhelmingly laboratory figures, drawn from simulated falls; a bathroom floor at 4 a.m. is not that. Notice also how small the gap in the review above is between worn and unworn sensors — 91.1% against 92.6%, in laboratory conditions. "No wearable" is a real convenience advantage in this class. It is not, on the published evidence, an accuracy advantage.

The trade-off nobody advertises: mounting

Fall detection often costs you the sensor's other functions. Aqara's FP2 page states that "Ceiling-mounting is required for fall detection", and that when the mode is active "most features of the FP2 including zone positioning and presence detection become unavailable". The same page states that "The FP2 Presence Sensor is not a medical device, and can only be used for notification purposes" (Aqara FP2 product page, checked 2026-09-07). Milesight's VS373 goes on the ceiling: "Make sure to install it parallel to the ceiling and floor", at an installation height of "2.3m~3m", and "keep it at least 1 meter from the wall" (Milesight VS373 product page, checked 2026-09-07).

So before a claim is even worth testing, check the ceiling: its height, whether the unit can be wired there, and what the product stops doing once it is up there.

The household this suits, and the one it does not

Best fit: one high-risk room, usually a bathroom or bedroom, for someone who will not wear a pendant, in a household where a real person will answer the alert. In care homes, this class competes with call bells and staff rounds rather than replacing them, and coverage is per room, so cost scales with rooms.

Poor fit: as the only safety measure for someone living alone with no responder. An unanswered alert changes nothing.

What to ask before buying

  • Quote the fall-detection claim in the vendor's exact words. Does it say "detects falls", or "may not detect all falls"?
  • Is there any accuracy data from real homes, with a sample size, or only lab results? Ask directly whether the headline figure came from simulated falls.
  • What is the false-alarm rate, and who gets woken by it?
  • Mounting: wall or ceiling, at what height? Some products only detect falls when ceiling-mounted, and lose other features in that mode.
  • Is it sold in Canada, with Canadian support and an ISED certification, or only shipped here?
  • Is it marketed as a medical device? Most are explicitly not, and are sold for notification only.

What it cannot do

It cannot catch every fall, and responsible vendors say so.

It is also blind to everything else. A fall sensor will not tell you that someone stopped eating, stopped going to bed, or has not left a room since yesterday. It reports one event, and only when it recognises it.
