Indoor cameras with AI: what they show, and where they can't go

The sensor class that shows you the most detail, and the one an older adult is most likely to refuse. Consent and storage decide it.

A camera is the only sensor class that can show you what actually happened. When something goes wrong, a caregiver can look rather than guess, and that is a genuine advantage no radar, pad or pendant offers. Everything else about the decision follows from two questions: which rooms will the person agree to, and what happens to the footage.

  • In a scoping review of 34 studies of older adults' privacy perceptions of passive in-home monitoring, "Concerns about cameras and visual data were raised in many studies (n = 15, 44.1 per cent), particularly in contrast to other forms of data and data collection devices", and "Two studies (5.9 per cent) found that activity sensors were more acceptable than cameras, resulting in less concern about privacy with their use" (Mheidly, Dempsey & Quinn, Ageing & Society, published online 18 May 2026).
  • Cameras dominate the fall-detection research that does not involve a wearable: of 80 studies in a 2025 systematic review, 30 used non-wearable sensors, and among those "the most common were cameras". Mean accuracy for the non-wearable group was 92.6%, but the authors note the datasets "still offer only stereotypical solutions to falls, often simulated", and that detection time "is rarely tested in real-life situations" (Gorce & Jacquier-Bret, Sensors, 2025).
  • Vendor fall claims in this class can be absolute. Nobi's site states "0 % Falls Missed" and "To date, every fall has been detected across all Nobi lights", with the disclaimer "Past performance does not guarantee future results"; no test method, sample size or independent study is cited on the page (nobi.life, checked 2026-09-07). Ask for the study before you buy the number.

What the software watches for

A camera streams video; software on the device or in the cloud looks for patterns and raises an alert. Features advertised in this class typically include person and pet detection, activity zones, two-way audio, night vision, and a saved clip you can review. Some ceiling-mounted eldercare products use optical sensors and claim automatic fall detection.

Where a camera is the right call

Living rooms, entries and hallways, with the household's knowledge. Cameras suit short, defined periods well: the weeks after a hospital discharge, or a specific worry a family wants to resolve.

In a care home or retirement home in Canada, a camera in a resident's room is a legal and consent question before it is a technical one, and the rules differ by province. Ask the home for its written policy on recording in a resident's room, ask who consented on the resident's behalf and how that consent can be withdrawn, and ask who holds the footage and for how long — data residency for senior care covers where it ends up. At home the rule is simpler but no softer: ask the person being watched first, and be ready to hear no.

What covers the rooms a camera cannot

The usual outcome of that conversation is a line drawn at the bathroom and the bedroom doors — which is why most households that use a camera end up mixing sensor classes rather than choosing one. Radar presence sensors report presence, movement and prolonged stillness for a single room with no lens and no microphone, so they can go where the camera is refused; acoustic monitoring is a staffed-building product that hears a room but needs a microphone in it; Wi-Fi sensing gives coarse whole-home motion with nothing installed. None of them can show you what happened, which is exactly what a camera is for. What to ask before buying

  • Who consented, and can they withdraw consent? Ask the person being watched first.
  • Where is video processed and stored, in which country, and for how long?
  • Who can view a live feed or a saved clip, and is access logged?
  • Can the camera be muted, covered or scheduled off, in a way the resident controls?
  • Is audio captured? A microphone records visitors, staff and roommates too.
  • What exactly does any fall or inactivity claim say, in the vendor's own words, and what is it based on — a real-home study, or simulated falls in a laboratory?
  • Does it keep working if the internet drops?

What it cannot do

It cannot see into the rooms where most of the risk sits. Bathrooms and bedrooms are where families draw the line, and those are exactly the rooms where falls and long lies happen.

It cannot make itself acceptable. Privacy objections to cameras are well documented, and no amount of encryption answers someone who simply does not want a lens in the room.

It also cannot watch itself. A camera with no one looking is a recording, not monitoring. Software alerts reduce that problem but do not remove it.

Where WalledCare fits
